Myanmar: How to End the Military's Impunity

The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, and Human Rights Watch have each independently determined that the military’s post-coup abuses amount to crimes against humanity. The broad-based and consistent nature of the crackdown reflects not the individual actions of security officers, but a systemic countrywide policy of the junta. These displays are tragic but not surprising for anyone who has been paying attention to the human rights situation in the country and of a military that for years has faced few to no consequences for its crimes.

Guests will discuss how key stakeholders can respond through the use of diplomatic levers, legal means and economic measures that can impact the junta’ revenues, including sanctions on the oil and gas sector.
