Ricarda, 2024 Summa Cum Laude in International Governance and Diplomacy
Coming from Germany, Ricarda Seitz has graduated Summa Cum Laude in International Governance and Diplomacy.
What skills/strategy helped you to succeed at PSIA?
Remembering that learning is a privilege, I think. We are students of PSIA because we want to be here and learn about our world and its challenges. I believe my curiosity about the materials and choosing courses that challenge me and teach me new things helped me engage with the content. Coming to classes with a curious heart engaging in discussions, also in group assignments and essays, and wanting to understand diverse perspectives made PSIA a fun and interesting endeavor. As a German, of course, I also appreciate some form of organizational system. Tracking assignments and deadlines helped me avoid becoming overwhelmed. But most importantly, I think having fun and being curious about the learning journey made the difference.
What part of your PSIA experience do you think will be of greatest help in your career?
I believe the moments when I truly got inspired and saw that what we are learning in the classroom can actually be applied in practice. Whether that was at embassy visits, during the internship semester I did at the UN and in BCG climate consulting, or in real-life negotiation classes with UN practitioners. I also absolutely loved about PSIA that there was so much to discover beyond courses: whether it is engaging as a Master Representative, during summer schools (which I got lucky to spend a week in Stockholm learning about negotiation techniques), or at conferences- PSIA has something to offer for everybody, and I really recommend reading all the emails we get and attending the great events. They broaden your horizon and teach about how exciting it can be to work on issues that mean something to you. The PSIA alumni network and mentoring are helpful tools to reach out to people working in exactly the positions or organizations we find interesting!
What advice would you give to current and future PSIA students?
Take the time to enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things. I think this quote is particularly relevant for us PSIA students living in a fast-paced world and environment. Beyond grades and academia, take your time to learn about yourself. Enjoy and appreciate what Paris has to offer: from concerts to discussion nights in the Cité Universitaire, conferences, museums, and marvelous architecture. Sitting in a park with friends, debating, or going on demonstrations for what is important to you. Some of my greatest learnings from my Paris time come from my friends who inspire me, make me challenge my own (cultural) assumptions, and show me what is possible.
