Richa Shivakoti, Research Area Lead, Migration Governance, Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration, Toronto Metropolitan University
Temporary migrant workers and their vulnerability became dramatically visible during the global pandemic as an unprecedented number were forced to return to their home countries. This research uses the case of Nepal, a highly remittance-dependent economy (remittances accounting for around 25% of the GDP) to study the consequences of the large-scale return of migrant workers to their home countries post-pandemic.In this talk, Dr. Shivakoti will present her recent research based on a SSHRC funded project with primary data collected from 150 pandemic returnee migrant workers from various destinations to Nepal with 4 sets of semi-structured interviews over a 2-year period. She will present research findings on the crisis return, the individual and institutional preparedness as well as the aspirations and capabilities of migrant workers post return.
