New Training for Sciences Po's Academic Community

Horizon Europe, the new EU research and innovation framework programme launched in January 2021, stands out due to the focus put on achieving greater gender equality in the European Research Area and ensuring the integration of the gender dimension in research, following European Council's conclusions of December 2020.
As from January 2022, it is an eligibility criterion for research performing organizations applying for Horizon Europe funding, to have a Gender Equality Plan in place, elaborated according to specific standards, and covering recommended areas of actions. Integrating sex and gender in the research design, also becomes the default setting for submitted projects, especially if dealing with those areas of research represented in the CIVICA alliance, and unless calls for projects specify the opposite. Gender balance in teams, also through ensuring work-life balance and equal access to leadership roles, mobility and opportunities, also becomes a ranking criterion for proposals. As several national research funding agencies are taking the same path, the rules of the game are being redefined, for which new capacities are to be built.

Sciences Po has developed a specific expertise in this realm, through the coordination of the EGERA (Effective Gender Equality in Research and the Academia, FP7, 2014-2017) and the evaluation of the SUPERA and RESET projects (H2020), also devoted to advancing gender equality and integrating the gender dimension in research. We will be happy to build upon this experience to provide a CIVICA-wide training session on these topics, which objectives stand as below:

  • To share definitions and data-supported facts about gender inequalities and bias in research
  • To raise awareness on the impact of unconscious and other gender bias on the quality and applicability of research outputs
  • To support the Horizon Europe-responsive integration of the gender dimension in collaborative research project proposals
