Meet CERI at the cinema!

Following our first festival on Youth of the World, which took place from 22 to 24 November, we are pleased to announce the launch on 7 January 2025 of a monthly film club, CERI@l'Entrepôt.

This event, which we hope will become a tradition, will be held every first Tuesday of the month and will feature a film presented and commented on by a CERI researcher. We are also already preparing the November 2025 festival, which will tackle the existential issue of climate change!

In the meantime, here's an initial look back at the Festival Jeunesses du Monde that has just taken place. The general idea was to launch a debate after each screening, by inviting one of us to speak. This enabled us to promote our research to a wider audience and to explore the arts and the senses in the analysis of our fieldwork. And it worked! Each of the five films screened at this inaugural session sparked fascinating discussions.

From the People's Republic of China to Iran, via Mexico, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, we discovered the dreams and struggles of young people who are in love, committed, disillusioned, even sometimes devastated or at war, but always grappling with the times. Through these life stories, we explored the societies from which these young people come. What aspirations do the world's youth have for the future, here and there? How do they see themselves, and how well are they understood by previous generations? While students are fighting for dignified living conditions (in Nigeria), adapting at all costs to violence (Mexico and Iran) and social and political taboos (China, Iran and Saudi Arabia), what are their modes of action in the face of societies undergoing major economic, political and environmental change? These questions were at the heart of the discussions with the audience, who were present for this initial encounter!

We seem to have succeeded in bringing together the world of cinematic sensibility and the social sciences in a venue, the Entrepôt, which has been firmly rooted in its neighbourhood, the 14th arrondissement, since 1975. It's a great honour to be welcomed here, and a pleasure to be able to temporarily relocate the CERI to help bring this high-quality cultural space to life, while promoting social science research.
