The lines of knowledge production in and about Africa and African diasporas are continually shifting as the political, institutional, ideological, and epistemological contexts within which they occur change. Taking scholarly engagement as a guiding thread, this introductory article poses four major questions about the past, present, and possible future of African studies. Does “Africa” constitute a legitimate academic area of study today? How can we simultaneously consider autonomous dynamics from below and relations of domination? How does the contemporary evolution of African societies help us consider those of other societies around the world? How can we interconnect the arenas of knowledge production about Africa without annihilating their plurality?
