Sibylle Duhautois
Sibylle Duhautois graduated from Sciences Po and holds a Master degree in History. Since 2012 she works in the Futurepol project as a research assistant. After having obtained her agrégation in history in 2013, she started her Phd thesis at the Centre for History at Sciences Po, under the supervision of Jenny Andersson. She is currently spending the academic year 2016-2017 in Harvard University as a fellow to the History department and as an affiliate to the Weatherhead Initiative on Global History within the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. In this context, she received the Arthur Sachs grant and she is taking part in the Fulbright program for PhD students.
Sibylle Duhautois is currently preparing her PhD thesis in the Futurepol project. Her research focuses on the notions of “global consciousness” and "world problems".
After World War II, and especially after the beginning of the 1960s, several international research projects in sociology, in peace studies or in futures studies have been conducted, whose common goal was to create or advance a "global consciousness" i.e. a sense of belonging to one unique human community sharing a common fate. To do so, those studies insisted on a set of problems weighing on the planet’s future. Disarmament, new technologies, development and environmental concerns were understood as issues of relevance for the future of the whole mankind that must be handled by those who represent it. Studying those projects and the ones in charge of them – the International Social Science Council (ISSC), the Women International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) among others – enables to show the evolution of the discourse about a common future and the diverse stages through which world long-term problems were conceptualized. This intellectual history only makes sense as long as it is considered in its political and geopolitical context: the Cold War and the emergence of the Third World. This research thus seeks to understand how the experts have attempted to raise awareness on those issues and to promote the use of their findings in international programs in order, not only to conceive a common future, but above all to act on the world’s future. It shows how international organizations such as the UNESCO responded to those initiatives and how they actually use long-term world problems in their programs.
In addition, from September 2015 to January 2017, Sibylle Duhautois managed the scientific activities: organization of seminars and conferences, team coordination and the dissemination of the different activities.
